EMPIRICISM AND APRIORI In order to appreciate Meinong's criticism of HusserI we must realize that Meinong was a strict empiricist - in epistemology. In the face of his extreme realism it may sound peculiar. But all his ontological results derive from his analysis of mental states and from his basic assumption that all presentation (except self-presentation) is of objects which are something other than itself or, in their being, even independent of it. All his epistemological results are based on psychological observations.

At least we can venture to interpret Meinong thus: all pseudo-objects correspond to contents and even are contemporary with contents. That is, pseudo-objects occur only if their corresponding contents exist. 3 If likewise all contents correspond to pseudoobjects is not clear. (They probably do in external perception. Compare with "Erfahrungsgrundlagen ... ", especially p. ) Pseudo-objects can be distinctly described, in favorable cases. Contents cannot at all be directly described but only indirectly as that which, in ideas or judgments, corresponds to the objects of which the ideas or judgments are.

25 f of this Introduction and by Meinong's two earlier papers in Ges. Abh. I, that, according to him, objects of higher order are apprehended by internal perception. In the following we have to concern ourselves with the question in what way the apprehension of objects of higher order takes place. We will be discussing psychic analysis and the production of ideas. CHAPTER 9. IDEA PRODUCTION Ideal objects of higher order are founded, that is, necessarily based, on their inferiora. The ideas of them are not founded on the ideas of their inferiora.
